What Are The Job Duties Of A Plumber?

Looking to start a career? Looking for a new career? Love working with your hands? If you answered yes to any or all of those questions, then why don’t you consider a job as a plumber? Kotz Heating, Cooling, and Plumbing is always looking for good people to work for us in Waterford, MI and Oxford, MI so let’s talk a bit about what it takes to become a plumber and the type of work you can expect to do.

JOB DESCRIPTION FOR A PLUMBER

A general description is that a successful plumber is a patient individual who has a practical mind, manual dexterity, and the ability to work efficiently with great attention to detail. The end goal is to install and maintain systems that transport water, waste, gases, or hot liquids. To that end the responsibilities and skills include:

  • Reading and understanding blueprints & drawings to plan water supply and waste disposal systems.
  • Cut, assemble, and install various types and styles of pipes and tubes without interfering with existing systems (e.g., electrical wiring & HVAC systems)
  • Locate and repair water supply systems (e.g., leaks)
  • Ability to repair and/or replace drainage systems and plumbing fixtures
  • Repair water heaters

THE ADVANTAGES OF WORKING AS A PLUMBER

Kotz believes there are many reasons to choose plumbing, or any of the skilled trades, as a job and career. The demand is strong and is expected to stay that way meaning that in a practical sense you will never face the prospect of a layoff. Right now there are people saying, “But being a plumber is menial work. You need to get a college degree.” I have no argument with that for some people…but not everyone.

COLLEGE DEGREE VS SKILLED TRADES

If your goal is a college degree that’s wonderful, but for many others the idea of another four or five years (more for an advanced degree) of school sounds like drudgery. For too many college students those four or five years end with a mountain of student loan debt and uncertain job prospects. A plumber can usually learn the trade on the job or during a one or two year technical school program. Instead of piling up debt he or she can be earning money while learning the advanced plumbing skills that will increase income in the future.
