Reverse Osmosis vs. Water Softener: How Do They Compare?

Michigan is famous for:

  • The auto industry
  • Boating & other water activities
  • Car vs deer accidents (especially in the U.P.)
  • Hard water

Are you tired of the taste of water filled with minerals? Tired of the mineral deposits in your pipes and fixtures? Tired of the soap scum in tubs and sinks? Then let’s talk about a couple ways to fix those problems in your Waterford, MI home.

Water softeners vs reverse osmosis

Nearly everyone is familiar with how a water softener works, but not everyone knows about a viable alternative, reverse osmosis. Here is how they compare in several categories.

  • Taste
    • Yes, most people will say there is a difference. Reverse osmosis systems essentially remove ALL minerals from water meaning it has a pure and clean taste with no supplements added. Water softeners use salt to remove most of the calcium, magnesium, and iron in water. The minerals that are left and the salt that is added do affect the taste of the water at least slightly.
  • Efficiency
    • If expense is the only consideration, then you will likely choose reverse osmosis. However, there is a tradeoff. These systems can only filter a set amount of water in a given amount of time. Water softeners are more expensive to operate with the cost of the salt and electricity, but they will ensure that your water is soft, regardless of how much water you use.
  • Water quality
    • Either choice will give you the benefits of high-quality water by filtering out the hard water minerals. The difference is how much they filter out. Reverse osmosis systems are so effective they remove virtually all mineral content, including some minerals that are an important part of the human diet. Water softeners will leave some mineral content in the water which can be beneficial for your health.
  • Maintenance
    • Both types of water conditioners are considered low maintenance. Reverse osmosis systems require a filter change about every 6 months, use only a small amount of electricity, and rarely suffer any breakdowns. Water softeners are also very reliable but do require regular salt changes in addition to changing the filter.
