In a perfect world the best time to do a heating system replacement in your Waterford, MI home is during the spring or summer. You can take your time in the decision making and planning stages because you don’t have to worry about the cold weather. But we all know it’s not a perfect world.
That ship has sailed
So, here it is in November and you’re fearful your old furnace may not be up for the challenge of another Michigan winter. Don’t despair because Kotz Heating, Cooling & Plumbing can take care of you.
Diagnose the problem
The first step is to determine what’s going on with your old furnace. Are your fears justified? Or can some reasonably priced repairs by a Kotz technician make it more likely your furnace will make it through the winter? If you don’t need a heating replacement right now, it will give you some time to think about the various heating and cooling choices available and which is best for your situation.
Choose your fuel
Chances are with any heating replacement you will stay with the type of heat you have now, but you should at least be aware of what else is available. So, let’s run through some of the choices:
Natural gas
If gas service is available to your home this will make the most sense because gas burning furnaces are extremely efficient and natural gas is the cheapest fuel.
Propane
If you don’t have natural gas, a simple conversion allows your furnace to burn propane. This means you will need a large propane tank on the property and make sure it’s filled on schedule, so you don’t run out.
Air source heat pump
These are an efficient form of electric heat but still not as economical as natural gas. On the plus side, electric heat means there’s no risk of gas leaks causing an explosion or carbon monoxide poisoning from a gas-burning furnace. However, heat pumps may have a difficult time keeping your home comfortable if the temperatures drop below zero. Note: A heat pump will also provide air conditioning during the summer.
Geothermal heating & cooling
This uses a ground source heat pump which simply means it takes advantage of the relatively constant underground temperature. This is an extraordinarily efficient system but does require underground excavation meaning it will cost more up front.
Don’t procrastinate
If the verdict is you need a heating system replacement, then don’t put it off. The longer you wait makes it more likely you’ll be left in a very cold house. When that happens you no longer have the luxury of doing this in an orderly process. The installation will have to be done as quickly as possible to keep your family safe and comfortable.
