Tips to Save Money This Summer

Everyone says they just love summer and the warm weather.  Until they open the electrical bill after a month of really hot weather. Kotz Heating, Cooling & Plumbing is here to help you. There are five, count them 5, easy things you can do to make your home more energy efficient.

  1. Don’t waste money keeping the pets and plants cool
If you are like millions of other people, you leave your home for several hours every day. As much as you love your Labradoodle and your African Violets, it’s okay to turn the thermostat up a little while you’re away. Remember, you don’t want to let the house get too hot, but turning it up a couple degrees should be fine.
  2. Install a programmable thermostat
The really efficient way to handle the situation is with a programmable thermostat. Once you program it, you don’t have to remember to adjust the thermostat when you leave the house. The best part is the house will be nice and cool when you get home. If you buy one that’s Wi-Fi enabled, you can change the setting with your smartphone if your schedule happens to change.
  3. Use your ceiling fans (or install them)
Let’s be very clear, fans do not cool the air; but they can make you feel cooler. When you feel cooler, you can set the thermostat a couple of degrees higher even when you are home. Make sure the fan blades are turning counterclockwise to get the cooling breeze.
  4. Check the temperature of the hot water heater
Yes, your water heater also has a thermostat. If it’s set higher than 120 degrees, you are wasting money. Do you really want to take a scalding hot shower or bath during the heat of the summer anyway? You will find 120 degrees is plenty warm.
  5. Get regular maintenance for your air conditioner
You knew this was coming, didn’t you? I know we can get a bit repetitive on this, but it’s the simple truth. Regular tune ups and maintenance will improve the efficiency of your A/C, and that translates to saving on energy and lower monthly bills.

For decades you have depended on Kotz Heating, Cooling & Plumbing for things like A/C repair in your Clarkston or Royal Oak home, but we can also help you cut those utility bills down to size. After all, the summer is supposed to be about having fun, not worrying about opening the bills.
