If Your Air Conditioner Isn’t Cooling, Try These HVAC Troubleshooting Tips

HVAC Troubleshooting - Kotz Heating

Summer is here, and that means the hottest part of the year is coming. Is your air conditioning system ready for the heat? The surest way to answer that question is to schedule a system tune-up. But maybe your system is not working properly and you want to check it out. If that’s the case, you can perform some HVAC troubleshooting to help determine if you need to call in in our professionals.

Here are a few troubleshooting tasks/tips to consider if your unit won’t turn on or if the air conditioner is not cooling:

  • Verify the system is getting power by making sure the breaker has not been tripped on the outside condensing unit. Then check the emergency switch on the blower inside to make sure it is on. If you find the breaker has been tripped, try resetting it. If it trips again, call our company for immediate service by our qualified technicians before trying to reset it again.
  • The thermostat is crucial to your system: is it in cooling mode or on auto? Check the temperature, set the thermostat to the A/C position and then turn to the on position. If your system still will not come on or function properly, you could have a bad thermostat.
  • If there is ice on your outdoor unit or refrigeration line, your system could be low on refrigerant or have a leak. Either way, it’s a problem and requires service. Service technicians can’t work on units if they are frozen, though, so turn the system off at the thermostat and put it in fan mode to begin thawing it out.
  • A clean or new air filter is important to system operation and efficiency; make sure you change it regularly.
