Don’t get chilled to the bone in your home sweet home. Kotz Heating, Cooling & Plumbing wants to make sure you stay comfortable during our often frigid Michigan winters. The most common form of home heating is a forced air furnace burning natural gas.
Furnaces by Trane and Bryant, two of the most respected names in the industry, are the featured brands at Kotz. Each manufacturer has several models to choose from depending on size and efficiency.
Reasons to choose a gas furnace
There are other heating systems out there, radiant and heat pumps for example, but there are some good reasons why gas furnaces are so popular.
- The upfront cost is usually less than other systems.
- Natural gas is the cheapest energy source (propane can be more expensive).
- Forced air heat warms your home up quickly.
Choosing the right furnace
Let’s be clear, there is no one right choice for everyone. It depends on the size of your house, how well it’s insulated, and how weathertight the doors and windows are. It takes a trained HVAC technician to make those calculations. Don’t let any salesperson tell you bigger is always better. A furnace that’s too large for your home can actually be inefficient.
Speaking of efficiency
It should be one of the most important factors to decide what furnace you install in your home. Furnaces receive what’s called an AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) rating. If the rating is 80 it means 80% of the fuel burned is used to heat your home. The other 20% is wasted. If your current furnace is 10 years old or older, chances are good it’s only about 55% to 70% efficient. Today’s furnaces have efficiency ratings as high as 97 percent. It doesn’t take a degree in mathematics to figure out a new furnace can often cut your energy bills significantly.
So, what’s the right number?
Efficiency is great but it comes at a cost. High-efficiency furnaces are going to cost more upfront. The basic advice Kotz gives everyone is to buy the most efficient furnace you can afford. Pay attention to the numbers during the sales process. You will find out how much you can save each month if you spend the money upfront for more efficiency and then you decide if it’s worth the investment.
